This Can't Become a Habit

What on earth is wrong with me?

Even though I've stayed within my calorie ranges, I have eaten nothing but junk for the past couple of days. I've got really good food in the fridge - a wonderful spinach salad, some grilled fish, even poached pears for crying out loud - but dinner last night was popcorn. The night before? Some ice cream (less than 1 serving) and an apple scone.

I'm usually a stickler for the food pyramid and balanced meals. A little protein, some veggies, a dash of starch, and a glass of milk if I can't get calcium in there any other way. So I have no explanation for the past couple of days.

But on the bright side, though I may be eating badly, I'm not overeating. That's something, I guess...

Has this happened to anyone else?

Lisa,
Don't be too discouraged. Sometimes it is better to just go on and eat what you are craving so you can get back to eating right. I know that when I try to avoid a craving I end up eating a too much of other stuff and still end up sabotoging my diet. Usually I just want a taste of the no-no foods. If I can contol myself from eating a full serving, I can have my cake and eat it too ( so to speak).

Yep, can't become a habit. You gotta give your body the good things it needs:) But sometimes, I just can't look another salad in the leaf! so-to-speak. I remember from your posts that you like something for a while and then get bored. Maybe you need a new healthy item to play with for a while? I am loving my all fruit smoothies. I add some healthy oil and flax seed. I know I am giving myself lots of healthy enzymes, vitamins and bioflavinoids.
Maybe you need a new salad love? Taco salad? with cheese-mmmm.
Don't give up!

SueAnne,
The stuff for taco salad (even all chopped up and in separate containers) is also in the fridge - that was last week's food! How funny that you would hit that on the nose! :)

I'm not eating much of the bad stuff - like I said I'm still within my calorie limits - but I'm eating only the stuff that normally I don't really want. I think this is just a one-off but it's still distressing. I don't have much of an appetite, but all I want when I do eat is high carb, sweet things (including lots of fruit). Grrr.

Been there...I can completely relate. That is why I ended up changing plans, I needed a little more structure because for ME I was not losing eating at the low calorie range (but not always eating the right things). For you, if you can get your groove back, you should be fine. Give yourself a time frame to play around here with your food combinations and then I agree, find something fun and new to love. Perhaps switching to soups or something, soups are often very low in calories and can be packed with vegetables and good healthy grains. Sorry your in a spot right now...keep working at it and let us know when you find your new food love!

You are acting like a toddler, testing your limits. Daring yourself to step in and make the corrections. You are being a stinker! But the grown up, smart part of you won't let the naughty child get away with it.

Okay, I forced myself to eat a good dinner last night. As per SueAnne's instructions, it was a taco salad (heavy on the spinach, light on the taco) with that mango salsa for dressing.

This morning I had some of the scrambled eggs in the fridge and a banana. Lunch will be spring rolls.

I am at the point where I'm forcing myself to eat, and for the first time in a very long time, all I really want is junk. But as they say, this too shall pass...

Lisa,
something that I find helps me sometimes is "planned cheats" or even planned "within plan" treats.

If I have a small bowl of ice cream to look forward to at night, if I think about that it helps me get through the cravings through the day. If I have a nice dinner out or a dinner 'off' planned, it helps me get through the times I'm craving a huge bowl of pasta with a creamy buttery sauce.

A suggestion to help get through the junk food craving is to plan: Tonight after dinner I'll have 10 fat free pringles. Etc. That helps me anyway, but sounds like you made great choices last night and this morning!!
